I recently had the opportunity to visit and shoot a couple of recently completed residences in the Vail Valley that featured products created by Vintage Woods. The finishes on these beautiful homes included siding, timbers fascia & soffit. The combination of the Vintage Woods, stone and metal elements really made these projects stand out in this neighborhood of custom homes.
I started 12 Dime Design about 8 years ago with my father and am proud to say that we are still at it through good times and bad. 12 Dime Design operates along the Colorado front range, Colorado’s mountain resort towns and just about anywhere custom homes are being built. Working with architects, custom builders and homeowners, 12 Dime Design provides only quality materials and offers exceptional customer service.
12 Dime Design is the culmination of years of seeking out and working with unique home finishes. The name “12 Dime” comes from a historic mining claim that we have in the hills above Boulder. These mines often proved to yield all sorts of riches. We feel that through our offerings and design services there are still some “treasures” to be found in the 12 Dime Lode.
Working with select manufacturers of building products like Vintage Woods, The Woods Company and Pioneer Millworks, 12 Dime Design has found partners that share similar philosophies….provide quality unique products and do what you say you are going to do.
Entrada Design, an architectural design group out of Breckenridge, Colorado is renown for creating natural works of residential art. With design concepts that mix environment and life, Entrada employs elements and materials that compliment the environment in which they create. The end results are designs that are unique to not only the individual sites but the clients needs as well.
This featured project is in Breckenridge, Colorado and built by Jeremy Fischer of Ivan Stanley & Assoc. The home sits on a solitary promontory that is both as rugged and beautiful as the structure itself. Entrada has once again succeeded in creating a home that blends with its surroundings and employs a creative mix of stone metal and woods. This project is currently a candidate for Mountain Living magazine’s 2012 “Home of the Year” as well as “Kitchen of the Year”. A great choice in both categories.
The exterior wood elements were provided by Vintage Woods and 12 Dime Design. Utilizing beetle kill pine and a proprietary finishing process, Vintage woods creates versatile and striking building products. The beetle kill, which is overwhelmingly prevalent in the Breckenridge forests, has proven to be very difficult to manage. Vintage Woods has created a way to utilize this often wasted resource on a scale that can make a difference.
“Entrada Design recently completed an 8600 s.f. progressively distinctive custom home in Breckenridge, Colorado. With our focus on merging art and architecture, during the design process, we turned to Dick Vossler at 12dime design for unique siding options from their Vintage Woods Collection. We needed a more contemporary look for a refined mountain home which sits on a high vista overlooking the Highlands Golf Course in Breckenridge.
Utilizing the beetle kill timber so prevalent in our area was an opportunity to turn an environmental adversity of our region into a positive application on a remarkable structure. The unique aging methods used by Vintage Woods presented many options for us to create the more modern, weathered look that we wanted without the expense of the added waste and instability incurred with reclaimed material.
12 dime design was passionate about complementing our design notions and they have been an asset to our team as we worked through the project specifics resulting in an extraordinary finished product. “ -Lori Kaczka, partner at Entrada Design
Anyone who has driven west into the mountains has seen the effects that the Mountain Pine Beetle has had on our forests. It is difficult to imagine that such a tiny creature can cause such massive destruction. Dealing with this destruction has proven to be quite a challenge for governments, private businesses and artisans.
Vintage Woods, a manufacturer of unique wood products, has created a process to transform the telltale “blue streaks” of beetle kill pine into a building material with beauty and character that rivals reclaimed barn-wood or Wyoming snow fence. The greatest benefits are reuse on a scale that can make a difference and the economy of using new, straight, uniform lumber. The siding is available in barn-red, brown, grey and dark grey. These options create great design versatility and the raw beetle-kill material has the potential to be custom milled for any number of creative uses. The finishes may also be applied to other species of woods including Douglas Fir beams creating the opportunity for use in both interior and exterior truss work.
Although not located in Denver, Vintage Woods is available locally through 12 Dime Design and has been used in a number of beautiful and creative projects in the Front Range, Colorado and Western United States.
