Girls Rock Denver at the Oriental Theater!

Denver, Colorado is home to many fantastic organizations, providing opportunity for all walks of our every growing life, here in the shadow of the Rockies. One particular organization stands out in their relentless pursuit of creating “rock stars” from young ladies.

“Girls Rock Denver seeks to empower young women and girls by putting instruments in their hands and unveiling what they already possess in their feet, fingertips, vocal cords, hearts, and minds.” –Girls Rock Denver, Vision Statement

And rock they do! 13 newly formed bands of empowered young women rocked a sold-out Oriental Theater, playing original works to adoring and shrieking fans. On this hot August Saturday afternoon these girls rocked Denver! It was an amazing and impressive showing.

The Girls Rock Denver program occurs annual and is offered only one week. Demand is high and potential rockers must complete an application and personal essay to be considered for participation. Once enrolled, the week is jam-packed with exercises, drills and lots of practice. The finale, of course, is the showcase concert.

The volunteer non-profit organization annually plans, raises money and selects the lucky few that get to experience this week-long journey to rock-stardom. To learn more bout this fantastic group of individuals visit their website or, better yet, join the crew for some delicious craft-beer and fundraising at Ratio Beerworks.

GenFit is a playground for all ages.

There are many ways to experience some serious family fun in Denver. Now, thanks to the creative minds, and bodies, of the crew at GenFit, parents have the opportunity to make getting fit a family affair. On a recent Saturday Instructors Wood and Breigh led a rowdy group of parents and their eager offspring in a fitness class that made training a lot less like work and a lot more like a rip-roaring good time.

Following a serious warm-up, the task of the day was a circus-like circuit routine. Featuring pull-ups, agilities, karate kicks, rope climbing and, of course, the giant-tire -roll, each muscle group was both addressed and attacked. The hour long class was like a fitness factory and participants moved from station to station like cogs in a well oiled, giggling machine. The culmination of the exhausting morning was a thorough stretch followed by lots of high-fives.

The GenFit Kids Workout was a huge success with both young and old begging for more!

Progressive Martial Arts, mixing the old and the new with great success!

Progressive Martial Arts or PMA is a Denver establishment in the martial arts world. Established in 1985 to teach a fantastic blend of traditional methods in a contemporary environment, PMA has something for the young and the old. PMA creates a fun, healthy yet disciplined philosophy in all that they offer.

At almost any time on any given day, the facility is a buzzing hive of dedicated practitioners, preparing for or completing age-appropriate classes or working on individual skills. The rules are simple: work hard, show respect for the study and others, protect your opponent at all times and of course, have fun. With participants ranging in age and ability from 2 1/2 to 82 years old, it is testament to the fact that the dedicated study of martial arts and the PMA methodology is for anyone who is willing to put in the work.

The guiding principles of PMA are summed up well by founder, Mr. Stewart Lauper, in describing the goals for the youngest participants:

“We’re not trying to make them ‘Kings of the Ring,’ just excellent humans. And skill in martial arts increases that chance exponentially.”

On a personal note: We have exposed our 8-year-old daughter to the entire gamut of childhood activities and classes with mixed results. Almost immediately upon our start with PMA it became evident that we had found a winner. Our daughter showed an intrinsic dedication to not only participating in the classes and exercises but also the principles of training and positive lessons followed in the practices at Progressive Martial Arts.

EdFest 2015 working hard to keep Edison Elementary great!

EdFest is the biggest and baddest fundraiser held to benefit the students of Edison Elementary School in Northwest Denver. The focus for this year’s funds will go towards PTA-funded projects and programs, with a special appeal for raising money for musical instruments. The crowd was huge and very willing to support our local elementary school.

EdFest 2015 was held at one of Northwest Denver’s finest watering-holes, Local 46. The back-yard beer garden was the perfect spot for a Cajun Crawfish Boil and “Corn-hole” tournament. Inside attendees had loads of goodies and opportunities to bid on in a silent auction. The “Step-and-Repeat” drew lots of camera-shy models hamming it up as the evening progressed. The final event of the Fest was a live auction led by PTA President and DPS School Board candidate Michael Kiley II.

A special thanks goes out to the gracious sponsors of the event: Local 46, Speaks Orthodontics, Sweet Cow Ice Cream, Tennyson Pediatric DentistrySnarf’sPaneraSushi HaiNY Pizza Pub, Orthodontics in the Highlands and more….

And of course, thanks to the event organizers who do such a good job of making giving money fun!

Hoopin’ in the hood…..Little Man Ice Cream hosts 4th Hula Contest.

Denver favorite Little Man Ice Cream hosted its 4th annual Hula Hoop contest this past weekend. This year’s event brought out a huge crowd as local schools were encouraged to compete for prizes and bragging rights in a fantastic bunch of catagories. The hoopers put on a great show of skills and sportsmanship throughout the afternoon. Thanks to the Denver Firefighters for coming out and cooling off all of the hot kids…and anyone else who happened to be anywhere near the spray of the fire truck!

Like the lovely sounds of little birds…..Big Kids Music Tour, Voice.

Big Kids Music Tour, a great opportunity for your older kids, is a fantastic four-course series hosted by Mile High Music Together in Denver’s historic Tennyson business district. The culmination of weeks of hard work featured a wonderful recital where the young songbirds described skills they had learned, sang solos on the mic and finally blasted out a powerful rendition of “Rock Around the Clock”. Accompanied by incredible instructor, Melissa Monforti, the class wowed parents and entertained all.

Big Kids Music Tour is made up of four separate classes: Drums, Keyboards, Guitar and finally Voice. Each of the classes teach respect, fundamental skills, interactive movement and story-telling and of course performance. Melissa is a patient and caring teacher and the classes are a real gift.

E.T., the Alamo Drafthouse & Plus Size BMX….. A show that is out of this world!

The Alamo Drafthouse, on south Santa Fe Drive, has a fabulous free summer outdoor film series going on now. Tuesday’s feature was Spielberg’s classic, E.T. and a crowd came out in force to watch under a beautiful Colorado night. Before the show, guests were treated to an extremely exciting bicycle stunt show, put on by the talented team from Plus Size BMX.  Riders jumped, spun and flipped to the awe of the hundreds on hand and a couple of lucky fans got to get an ants eye view of what high flying jumpers can do. There was even a special appearance from Eliot and E.T. who took a wild ride over the jump. Prizes were liberally distributed to the screaming throngs and autographs were happily signed.

Participants had the opportunity to win prizes galore. The young one’s could create an E.T. communicator and attempt a Reese’s Pieces pick-up, complete with alien gloves. The Humane Society of the South Platte Valley sponsored an E.T. look-alike contest for those that brought their dogs and of course the “Draft House” had to hold a beer chugging contest for those old enough.

Giant Bicycles was on hand to provide a bike corral for those that opted to ride to this fantastic, family-friendly event. Be sure to check out the Alamo’s schedule for their remaining summer features. They are events not to be missed!
